Archbishop Tapio Luoma assumed office on 1st June 2018. Bishop Samuel Salmi presided at his installation on 3rd June 2018 at Turku Cathedral.
Tapio Luoma was ordained priest in 1987. He holds a Doctorate in Theology. The topic of his dissertation was the relationship between theology and science.
Before his election as Archbishop Luoma worked as an Assistant Priest and Chaplain in Peräseinäjoki between 1987 and 1998, as Chaplain in Ilmajoki between 1998 and 2002, and as Vicar of Seinäjoki between 2002 and 2012. He served as Clerical Assessor of the Diocese of Lapua between 2001 and 2007 and as Area Dean of Southern Ostrobothnia between 2010 and 2012. Between 2012 and 2018 he served as Bishop of Espoo.
Luoma has been a member of the General Synod since 2008. He was elected priest of the year in 2000. Luoma and his wife have three adult children.
